Nowadays, we are witnessing an exponential development of smart devices with an estimated growth rate beetween 20 and 30% over the next 10 years. This subject is positionned at the heart of plans for the new industrial France (smart factory, smart grid, smart wearable, smart object, e-health, etc). Dealing with these systems requires not only multidisciplinary technical expertise but also a strong sense of innovation and sensitivity to societal progress.


The INSA of Toulouse has implemented various Transversal Multidisciplinary Courses (PTP). They are mainly organized around multidisciplinary projects carried out by groups of students from various specialties.

The transversal multidisciplinary course « Innovative Smart System » (ISS) at the INSA of Toulouse, aims the establishment of a training, during the last year of engineering school, to train an engineer able to innovate, that is to say able to offer, design, produce, distribute and market a "smart system "starting from the component to the business application taking into account the societal aspects.

This course covers the social aspects, innovation techniques (e.g. TRIZ, creative sessions ...), entrepreneurship, physical aspects and manufacturing of sensors / actuators, fast prototyping in electronics, communication mechanism and architecture of Internet of Things and the analysis and processing of data from these systems with a connection Cloud and Big data.

The whole is validated by an innovative production which will make the students use most of their multidisciplinary skills. On this training, the heart of the pedagogical innovation lies in the following points that allow a strong commitment, acute retention and success of each of our students.

  • First of all, this course sets up an innovative evaluation through a portfolio of skills that makes the students responsible for their training. It evaluates the skills and asks them to reflect on their own learning processes and methods. It highlights and enhances all learning experiences, express or implied, and allows to become independent and responsible with their own learning process.
  • Then the ISS training wanted to bet on the multidisciplinary and diverse backgrounds of students, internally (Physical Engineering, Automatic, Electronic, Computers and Networks) and externally (from Institute of Business Administration, Toulouse Business School) to stimulate and promote their exchanges. The course takes place at the INSA Toulouse. End of course testimonies are certifying the achievement of this objective.
  • Finally, this formation was guided through its thematic choices for students to be active players, passionate, rich from the diversity in the connection between the results from pre-industrial research laboratories and their use by industries and public actors (cf. figure 1).
